Oman mulls resuming economic activities after coronavirus suspension

Oman said Thursday that it is studying a proposal to resume economic activities, which have been halted due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

This came during a video press conference organized by the supreme committee in charge of dealing with the coronavirus at the Ministry of Health, which was attended by the officials from the ministries of health, social development, agriculture and fisheries, and the Muscat municipality.

Shawqi Al-Zadjali, assistant director general of Health Affairs at Muscat municipality, said that meetings and discussions had been held to study the possibility of resuming some commercial activities, which would be in the interests of all.

“There are teams looking into the type of commercial activities that can resume, making sure that they adhere to health control and preventive measures. The results of these teams will be presented to the supreme committee to consider,” Al-Zadjali said.

Mohammad bin Saif Al Hosani, undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, said that the total cases of coronavirus in the country amounted to 1,716, of which 38 percent are Omanis.

The sultanate has not yet reached its peak of infections, he said.

The number of recoveries reached 307, while that of hospitalized patients was 39, nine of which are in intensive care.

The Omani government has suspended all domestic and international flights, with the exception of the Musandam governorate’s border flights and air cargo flights, since March 29 to curb the coronavirus spread.
