The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has warned visitors that the coasts of the Sultanate in Dhofar Governorate are currently witnessing a large numbers of poisonous marine creatures similar to the jellyfish named ‘Portuguese man o’ war’ and ‘Blue Bottle.’

These types of jellyfish are spotted mainly in the beaches of Al-Mughassil Beach and Taqah, according to a statement issued by the Ministry on Wednesday.

“The researchers collected samples in order to classify the object that was found to be of the type Physalia Utriculus prevalent in the Indian-Pacific Ocean, and it is considered less toxic than the other type spread in the Atlantic Ocean, which is the type Physalia Physalis.”

“The bite of the Portuguese man of war in the Indian-Pacific Ocean P. utriculus may cause severe pain with some minor to moderate health complications, such as cuts to the skin, redness and scratching, and complications may increase in children, the elderly and those with weak immunity.”

“Therefore, caution is required when swimming or beaching in the said region or any other area in which it is observed to be present,” the Ministry added.
